What Is a Unisex Fragrance? How to Choose One That Feels Like You
Short answer: A unisex fragrance is a perfume composed to be worn by anyone, rather than marketed to men or women. Its character comes from the notes, not from a label: citrus, woods, florals, spices and resins all work on every skin. Every Parfum Celeste extrait de parfum is unisex, so the only question is which mood you want to wear: fresh, warm, romantic or dark.
The fragrance aisle has long been split into "for him" and "for her." Yet a rose does not know who is wearing it, and neither does cedar. This guide explains what unisex really means, why the old categories are loosening, and how to find a scent that suits you rather than a stereotype.
What makes a fragrance unisex?
There is no rule or ingredient that makes a perfume "male" or "female." Those categories come mostly from marketing and habit. Fresh, sharp, woody scents were traditionally sold to men; soft florals and sweet notes to women.
A unisex fragrance sets those habits aside. It is built so that its notes feel balanced and wearable on anyone. In practice, unisex fragrances often:
- Pair contrasts: bright citrus with warm amber, or rose with patchouli.
- Use notes from across the old divide: jasmine next to cedar, vanilla next to leather.
- Focus on mood and moment, not on who should wear them.
Skin matters more than gender
The same fragrance smells slightly different on two people, because it develops with the warmth and chemistry of each skin. That is why we suggest testing on skin rather than paper and waiting about 30 minutes for the dry-down. Our guide on how to choose a signature scent goes deeper.
Why choose a unisex perfume?
- Freedom. You choose by what you love to smell, not by which shelf it sits on.
- Shared bottles. Couples and friends can borrow from one bottle.
- Easier gifting. You can choose by the person's style instead of guessing a category. See how to choose a perfume gift.
- A more personal signature. A scent worn by choice, not by default, tends to feel more like your own.
The five Parfum Celeste fragrances, by mood

All five are unisex extraits de parfum in 100 ml bottles, blended in-house at our own warehouse in Irving, Texas. You can browse them together in the collection.
Fresh and bright: Ombre Celeste and Celestial Blaze
Ombre Celeste ($100) feels like the first perfect spring morning. Bergamot, grapefruit and lemon open onto apple, jasmine and patchouli, then settle on amber, vanilla, vetiver, guaiacwood and musk. Light and optimistic, but the amber keeps it warm. More in our Ombre Celeste notes guide.
Celestial Blaze ($100) is golden hour all at once. Lemon, bergamot, grapefruit and ginger lead into jasmine, mango and red berries, with a base of amber, cedar and moss. Read the Celestial Blaze spotlight.
Romantic and warm: Knightfall
Knightfall ($130) is dark romance: pomegranate, red berries and orange, a heart of geranium and rose, and a base of amber, vanilla and patchouli. A rose fragrance that wears as well on a man as on a woman. See the Knightfall spotlight.
Deep and nocturnal: Saphire Glow and Lunar Eclipse
Saphire Glow ($150) is warm and tropical with a dark heart. Passionfruit, saffron and grapefruit open onto oud, ginger, rose and patchouli, over a base of leather, amber, vanilla, labdanum and vetiver. More in the Saphire Glow guide.
Lunar Eclipse ($160) is rare nocturnal power. Passionfruit, saffron and violet open onto oud, rose, hibiscus and cashmere, settling on leather, amber and vanilla. See the Lunar Eclipse guide.
How to choose your unisex fragrance

1. Start with a moment, not a category
Ask when you will wear it most. Mornings and warm days suit the fresh pair. Dinners and evenings suit Knightfall. Late nights and colder months suit Saphire Glow or Lunar Eclipse.
2. Notice which notes you already love
If you reach for lemon in your tea or cedar in a candle, you will likely enjoy Celestial Blaze. If you love roses, try Knightfall, where rose meets pomegranate and patchouli. If you are drawn to smoky, resinous scents, explore the oud pair. Our fragrance notes explained guide helps you put names to what you like.
3. Test on skin, over a full day
A fragrance changes over hours. Wear one on each wrist, then compare how each feels at the opening, after 30 minutes and in the evening.
4. Try all five before you commit
The Discovery Set holds all five extraits de parfum in 5 ml size for $35, so you can wear each for a day or two before choosing a full bottle. Read more in our Discovery Set guide.
Wearing a unisex extrait de parfum well
An extrait de parfum is the most concentrated form of a fragrance, so a little goes a long way. Start with a light application on your pulse points; you can always add a little more later. Apply to moisturized skin and do not rub your wrists together. For more, see how to make perfume last longer and how to layer fragrances.
Frequently asked questions
Can men wear a perfume with rose or jasmine? Yes. Florals are not gendered. In Knightfall, rose sits beside pomegranate and patchouli; in Ombre Celeste, jasmine sits between citrus and amber. Both wear well on anyone.
Are all Parfum Celeste fragrances unisex? Yes. All five are composed as unisex extraits de parfum: Ombre Celeste, Celestial Blaze, Knightfall, Saphire Glow and Lunar Eclipse.
Is unisex the same as "neutral" or mild? No. Unisex describes who a fragrance is for, not how strong it is. Lunar Eclipse and Saphire Glow are deep and bold; Celestial Blaze is bright and lively.
What is the best unisex fragrance to start with? If you are unsure, start with The Discovery Set and wear each scent for a day. If you want one full bottle, Ombre Celeste is the easiest to wear from morning to evening.
Can a couple share one unisex bottle? Yes. Because a fragrance develops differently on each skin, the same bottle will smell slightly different on each of you.
